How to Measure & Prepare Your Walls for Wallpaper

Learn with Our Step-by-Step Guides

Why careful measuring & prep matter

Wallpaper looks its best—and lasts the longest—when the wall is correctly measured, smooth, clean, dry, sound, and properly primed. Skipping prep can lead to seams opening, bubbles, or failure to stick—especially on dusty, chalky, or raw surfaces. Trade associations and leading manufacturers all stress clean, sound walls and appropriate primers as non-negotiables.

Part 1: Measuring and Ordering Wallpaper

  1. Measure Your Space
Measure the height (floor to ceiling) and width (corner to corner) of each wall. Include alcoves, recesses, and note doors/windows separately.

Part 2: Preparing Your Walls

Ensure walls are smooth, clean, dry, stable, non-powdery, and primed. Follow these steps:

  1. Check Stability
Scrape and sand lightly. If paint/plaster flakes, remove loose material and repair.

  2. Clean Thoroughly
Wash with mild detergent/degreaser, rinse, and dry completely to remove dust, grease, or smoke residue.

  3. Ensure Dryness
Walls must be dry, with room temperature stable at 18°C or higher. Avoid high humidity unless using humidity-rated materials.

  4. Remove Old Wallpaper
Strip completely, wash off paste residue, rinse, and dry.

  5. Smooth Textured Walls
Skim-coat textured surfaces, sand, and dust off. Optionally, apply lining paper for better results.

  6. Address Powdery Surfaces
If the wall leaves dust on your hand, apply a problem-surface sealer to stabilize before priming.

Part 3: Priming for Success

Priming ensures a stable surface, improves adhesion, reduces seam issues, and simplifies future removal.

  • Raw Drywall/Skim Coat: Apply a pigmented wallpaper primer. Spot-seal damaged areas with a penetrating sealer first if needed.
  • New Plaster: Let it cure fully, then use an alkali-resistant sealer/primer, followed by wallpaper primer.
  • Painted Walls: Sand to degloss, clean, and apply wallpaper primer.
  • Powdery Surfaces: Use a penetrating sealer to bind the surface, then apply wallpaper primer.

Allow primers to dry fully (typically 24 hours) before hanging wallpaper.

Part 4: Installation Day Checklist

  1. Acclimate wallpaper rolls in the room for 24 hours.
  2. Turn off power, remove cover plates, and mask fixtures.
  3. Use a plumb line to align the first drop (walls aren’t always straight).
  4. Choose the correct adhesive for your wallpaper type.
  5. Keep sharp blades ready and change frequently for clean cuts.
  6. Smooth carefully and wipe away excess paste immediately.

Special Considerations

  • Bathrooms/Kitchens: Use humidity-rated wallpaper and adhesive, ensuring good ventilation.
  • Historic/Damaged Walls: Severe chalking, mold, or structural issues may require professional repair.
  • Murals/Large Repeats: Order extra material and consider a professional for precise alignment.

Quick Installation Summary

  1. Measure walls and calculate rolls (always round up).
  2. Remove old wallpaper, clean, and repair walls.
  3. Test for powdery surfaces and seal if needed.
  4. Prime with a wallpaper-specific primer.
  5. Maintain a warm, dry room.
  6. Hang wallpaper using a plumb line and appropriate adhesive.

Final Tips

Always prime raw walls. Seal powdery surfaces before priming. Never hang over dirt, grease, or loose material. Follow these steps for a seamless installation, a professional finish, and long-lasting results.
